Unfortunately while computers and systems are generally highly helpful, they are also by their very nature quite unreliable. And even if your computer never breaks down, then there’s always the chance that they might get dropped, or stolen, or burned in a house fire…

In short you can’t account for every situation, but what you can do is use your common sense and take preventative measures.

Here is how to back up your files…

Physical Storage

It’s a good idea to back up your files on some kind of physical storage at least weekly. Physical storage means things like portable hard drives and things like memory USB drives. By storing some files on these things you will have something physical that you can use to keep your files safe. It could happen…

If you want something a little more portable to back your files up with then how about using your smart phone – which probably has a few gigabytes worth of storage, and you always have access to it.

However this isn’t entirely a suitable method for backing up all of your files, as you will find that it takes a lot of time to back up your files this way.

Online Storage

At the same time it’s also a good idea to look into online storage methods, and there are many of these you can use in order to keep your files safe. For instance it is possible to use online storage services that will back up all your files automatically when you connect, which is a great for the absent minded.

These dedicated backup services can be expensive. If you are a web entrepreneur then the files you will care most about backing up will be things like word documents and .HTML files – which are very small. You can easily back up these files by simply dropping them onto the server which you use for your website.

Meanwhile you also have a huge amount of storage that comes free with your e-mail. Google Drive provides 5 gigs of free storage, you could also e-mail your documents to yourself and then mark them as starred e-mail which will enable you to easily find them.

Free cloud services that you can use for backing up your files are iCloud (if you own an Apple product), Google Drive or DropBox.

Google Drive is a service for storage that is cloud based, with many analysts terming it to be long awaited, made available, quite obviously, by Google. It is said to be a replacement of Google Docs which will now no longer be available.

Google Drive will allow you to be able to store, share and access your files on this new platform, and the good thing is that it is available to the general public for free. With Google Drive, you get five gigabytes of storage at no cost, storing and viewing capabilities and also integration of this cloud service to other Google products such as Gmail and Google+.

So why should you use Google Drive? Well, it is seen that this cloud service is generally directed to those who already use other Google applications, and it can be seen to be a good way to complement those other services that are widely in use. For instance, if a you are a user of Google Play, and you buy a movie there, have some documents or even have got contacts on your Android smart phone, Google Drive would be a good place to have all these stored in one place for easy access.

Currently, there are other services available on the Internet that offer cloud computing, a concept that is relatively new. However, whilst it could be seen that Google would like to be part of this industry and offer competition to the likes of iCloud, Dropbox or SugarSync, it should be seen that the provision of other services by Google such as mail and the rest would seem to give Google Drive the edge over the rest, as users would find it to be great to be able seamlessly use the Google apps.

To get you started out on Google Drive, just head to drive.google.com and have the service enabled. For those who have used Google Docs, you would find that the interface is generally similar, and it is possible to perform such actions as creating files, folders, searching on the top bar and also dragging and dropping files into the window of the browser so as to upload files. A difference that you would note from its predecessor is that you can install a Google Drive app onto your desktop, and hence manage your drive from the desktop. This means that when you add a file to this Google Drive folder, it would also be uploaded to the Web drive, as long as you are on an internet connection.

An interesting feature that you would find in Google Drive is the capability to install third party applications, those that work quite well and without hitches with Google Drive. For instance, DocuSign is an app that you could install and use to sign official documents, while Pixlr allows you to edit photos that you have uploaded to Google Drive. Lastly, as an android user, you would be happy to note that a Google Drive app on android would soon be available.

DropBox gives you 2 gigs of free space, but they give you 500 megabyte more space for each friend you invite. 50 gigs is $9.99/month or $99.00/year, 100 gigs is $19.99/month or $199.00/year. Dropbox gives you a folder so that you can sync your information across computers and to the cloud.

Skydrive gives you 7 gigs of free space (used to be 25 gigs), 20 gigs per year costs you $10, 50 gigs is $25 per year and 100 gigs is $50 per year. Very cheap for space. Skydrive doesn’t give you a folder to sync to, but you can get a free application called Gladinet which will help you set this up.

Google Drive gives you 5 gigs of free space. You can get 25 gigs of space for $2.49 per month and 100 gigs would run you $4.49 per month. Gives you a folder so that you can sync your information across computers and to the cloud like Dropbox.

Amazon Cloud Drive gives you 5 gigs of space. Amazon Cloud drive gives you a folder so that you can sync your files across computers and to the cloud. Plans cost $20 for 20 gigs, $50 for 50 gigs and $100 for 100 gigs per year.

Box.com gives you 5 gigs of free space. Plans are 25 gigs for 9.99 per month, 50 gigs for 19.99 per month.

What is the largest file I can download to these services:
Dropbox: 300MB on website; no limit on desktop ( I am sure it would top out at some point)
Amazon Cloud Drive: 2GB
SkyDrive: 2GB
Google Drive: 10GB
Box.com 1GB for 25 gig and 50 gig plans and 25mb for free plans

Computer networks are a critical component of today’s businesses operations, and there’s no sign that the corporate digital enterprise will become any less important in years to come. In fact, it’s almost a sure thing that our electronic infrastructures will only become more critical than ever to the everyday performance of business.

That means that business is investing a lot of its confidence in the electronic apparatus that makes up most corporations’ communications networks. From voice messaging to document exchange and rich media streaming there is hardly a critical function that business performs that is not somehow channeled through the corporate electronic spinal column that practically every business on earth depends on.

Implementing Testing To Prevent Potential Trouble

Business leaders have put a lot of faith in their electronic enterprises, and that in turn puts a lot of pressure on the people who maintain them to make sure that the networks functions in top form and can be counted on to accommodate a firm’s needs at any time of day or night, every day of the year. In order to ensure that a digital infrastructure functions reliable around the clock administrators must implement testing that will assess a network’s strengths and point out potential trouble areas that may cause service outages in the future.

One method of predicting both a network’s strengths and weaknesses is via conducting a SOASTA load test, which will simulate various volumes of traffic that your network must accommodate, and this can help point to areas that might at some time experience difficulties. Administrators can use the testing components to simulate higher-than-normal levels of traffic so that data bottlenecks and other difficulties will come to light.

Enter Mobile Applications

In all likelihood, with increasing demands being placed on corporate networks, a higher than expected quantity of data will likely have to be accommodated on your network at some future date, so it behooves you to experiment with network testing so that you can accurately predict how your network will behave when greater levels of traffic do appear.

Not only are desktop application placing more ambitious demands on the corporate network these day, mobile applications have become popular application in business and are typically the source of a large portion of a corporate network’s data traffic. To help monitor traffic coming from those sources it’s critical that administrators perform SOASTA mobile application testing to ensure that the many different kinds of mobile applications being used on your network are functioning efficiently and are not conflicting with your operating system or other applications being used on the network.

SOASTA load test provides service for CloudTest Performance Testing. SOASTA mobile application testing with TouchTest™ Technology allows real-time correlationg and analysis of data in order to find and fix problems.
