Universal Serial Bus(USB) 3.0 has been finalized.

USB 3.0 has a 10 gold increase over it's 8 year old brother USB 2.0. USB 3.0 is also known as USB Superspeed versus USB 2.0 which is called Hi-Speed.

USB 2.0 480Mbps

USB 3.0 4.8Gbps, 10 times more than USB 2.0

The new USB 3.0 connectors and cables will be backward compatible with USB 2.0 cables and connectors. You won’t get the full bandwith unless you’re using a USB 3.0 cable with USB 3.0 devices and ports. It is nice to know that plugging in the wrong usb cable won't destroy your system.

Intel's example is that the speed of USB 3.0 is capable of transferring a 27GB HD movie to your new device in only 70 seconds. It would take 15 minutes to transfer the same file using USB 2.0.

Keep in mind that you can only transfer at this speed if your device and cable is capable of transferring at this rate.

The new standard isn't expected to start appearing on motherboards until the last half of 2009, with USB 3.0 compliant devices appearing sometime in 2010.
